About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Mascarene Petrel
35–36 cm. All-black petrel with hooked bill. Critically Endangered; breeds only Réunion Island; fewer than 250 adults estimated. One of the rarest seabirds. Threatened by introduced predators and light attraction; known mainly from bones and very occasional sightings at sea.
