About These Birds
Great Cormorant
The great cormorant is one of the most widespread seabirds in the world. Unlike most waterbirds, cormorants lack fully waterproof plumage, leading to the iconic pose of standing with wings spread open to dry. In Asia, cormorants have been used by fishermen to catch fish for over a thousand years.
Bounty Islands Shag
60–65 cm. Black and white pied shag; orange facial caruncles; pink feet. Endemic to Bounty Islands, New Zealand subantarctic. Vulnerable; total population fewer than 600 birds on remote barren islets. Feeds on fish in cold surrounding waters; does not disperse far from breeding islands.
