About These Birds
Talaud Rail
Talaud Rail (Gymnocrex talaudensis) is a poorly-known rail endemic to the Talaud Islands in the northern Moluccas, Indonesia. Similar to Blue-faced Rail; brown above with some rufous tones; bare facial skin. Inhabits forest and scrub on small islands. Known from very few specimens.
Hawaiian Rail
Hawaiian Rail (Zapornia sandwichensis) is an extinct flightless rail formerly endemic to the Island of Hawai'i. Known from a single 19th-century specimen and subfossil bones. Dark brown plumage with greatly reduced wings. Extirpated by the late 1800s due to introduced predators and habitat loss.
