Die Kohlmeise ist die größte europäische Meisenart und einer der am besten erforschten Wildvögel der Welt. Studien im Wytham Wood bei Oxford verfolgen die Kohlmeisenpopulation bereits seit den 1940er-Jahren und haben enorm zur Ökologie- und Evolutionsforschung beigetragen.
