About These Birds

African Openbill

72–90 cm. All-black plumage with gloss; distinctive large bill with a gap between mandibles adapted for extracting apple snails. Resident across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar in wetlands, rivers, and rice paddies. Feeds almost exclusively on molluscs. Colonial breeder in trees near water.

Storm's Stork

75–91 cm. Black and white with white neck; bare red facial skin; red and yellow bill. Critically Endangered; restricted to lowland forest wetlands of Borneo, Sumatra, and Peninsular Malaysia. Highly sensitive to forest loss. Very few confirmed nesting records; one of Asia's rarest storks.
